Whale Watching in Hermanus — Day Trip from Cape Town

Between June and November, Walker Bay off Hermanus becomes one of the world's best land-based whale-watching sites. Southern right whales come so close to the cliffs that no boat is required — and the official Whale Crier announces sightings with a kelp horn. A day trip from Villa Austral is one of the most memorable experiences of a Cape holiday.

    Getting there from Kommetjie

Hermanus lies about 130 km east of Kommetjie. The most scenic route runs over Sir Lowry's Pass and Bot River — around a two-hour drive. With more time, take the coastal detour via Betty's Bay, home to another African penguin colony and the Harold Porter Botanical Garden.

    Best Cliff Path viewpoints

Gearing's Point — the classic spot, right next to the old harbour.
Sievers Punt — quieter, often with mothers and calves in the bay.
Kwaaiwater — best light in the afternoon.
Grotto Beach — long sandy beach for a walk afterwards.

    Whale Festival

In late September Hermanus celebrates the Whale Festival — with live music, food trucks and family programmes. If you travel in this window, start early and reserve a table at Bientang's Cave Restaurant, set into a rock cave right above the surf.

    If you'd rather stay close

False Bay off Simon's Town also offers excellent whale watching — plus a wider range of Cape Peninsula wildlife. Check availability.
