The sundowner is South Africa's most beautiful ritual: a glass of wine, the last light of day and a view that knows no limits. The Cape Peninsula provides the perfect stage — and the best spots are right on Villa Austral's doorstep.
Chapman's Peak Drive — The Golden Hour Over the Atlantic
Chapman's Peak Drive is not just one of the most beautiful coastal roads in the world — it is also one of the most spectacular sundowner spots in the entire southern hemisphere. 114 curves, 600-metre cliffs and the ocean below bathed in liquid gold. The car park halfway along (officially "Chapman's Peak Lookout") offers the perfect westward view — straight into the sunset.
From Villa Austral it is only 5 km to the Noordhoek entrance of the pass. Pack a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc from Cape Point Vineyards, two glasses and a picnic blanket. Leave an hour before sunset, park at the Lookout and let the day turn golden.
Long Beach — Sundowner on Foot
The simplest and perhaps most beautiful sundowner spot needs no car: 300 metres from the Villa's garden to Long Beach, shoes off, walk towards Noordhoek. The sun sets over the Atlantic, Chapman's Peak becomes a black silhouette and the sky blazes in orange, pink and violet. Different every evening, breathtaking every evening. Bring an Amarula on the rocks.
Tip: Full Moon at Long Beach
During a full moon, Long Beach is bathed in silver light. The moon rises behind the mountains while the sun sets in the west — for a few minutes both are visible simultaneously. There are few places in the world where this spectacle is so dramatic.
Cape Point Vineyards — Wine, Views & Community
Cape Point Vineyards (8 km from Villa Austral) is the nearest winery — and offers one of the best sundowner spots in the area. The terrace looks across the vineyards to Noordhoek and the Atlantic. The Sauvignon Blanc Reserve is excellent, the Isliedh (a Bordeaux blend) even better.
Every Thursday the legendary Thursday Community Market takes place (16:30–20:30): street food, live music and wine at sunset. It is the social highlight of the week in Noordhoek and a must for every Villa Austral guest.
Signal Hill — Cape Town's Most Dramatic Viewpoint
Signal Hill (35 km from Villa Austral) is Cape Town's most popular sundowner spot: the view across the entire City Bowl, Table Mountain, Lion's Head, Robben Island and the Atlantic is simply one of the greatest city vistas in the world. Capetonians come here with picnic blankets, wine coolers and good music. The atmosphere is relaxed and celebratory at the same time.
The Roundhouse — Sundowner in a Historic Setting
The Roundhouse in Camps Bay (28 km) is an 18th-century rotunda that today houses a first-class restaurant and bar. The terrace above Camps Bay offers panoramic views of the Twelve Apostles and the Atlantic. A sundowner here — with a cocktail or glass of champagne — is one of the more elegant experiences at the Cape.
Groot Constantia — Wine Tasting at Sunset
The oldest wine estate in the southern hemisphere (est. 1685) offers a stunning backdrop for a sundowner: Cape Dutch architecture, centuries-old oaks and vineyards glowing in golden light. The wine tasting (R120 for 5 wines) is one of the best in the region. Highly recommended: the Gouverneurs Reserve and the Grand Constance (a historic dessert wine that Napoleon drank on St Helena).
The Villa Austral Terrace — The Most Private Sundowner
At the end of the day, the most beautiful sundowner is often the most private one: on the terrace of Villa Austral, with a glass of Pinotage, the sound of the Atlantic and a sky that paints a new masterpiece every evening. No restaurant, no lookout can replace that — a home by the sea, built for exactly this. Check availability.
