While Muizenberg gathers beginners and Big Bay attracts kitesurfers, Kommetjie belongs to the purists — locals who paddle out before sunrise in 12-degree water at the Cape of Good Hope, travellers chasing the Outer Kom, and families showing their children the first whitewash at Long Beach. ## Outer Kom — The Legendary Right-Hander The Outer Kom is the reason surfers from around the world come to Kommetjie. A world-class right-hand reef break that delivers perfect, long waves on a big south-west swell — up to 300 metres of rideable face. The take-off is steep, the wave hollow, and the surrounding kelp forest lends an almost mystical atmosphere. But beware: the Outer Kom is no beginner spot. Strong currents, rocky bottom and the nearby seal island (yes, sharks are real here) make it a spot for experienced surfers. The locals are friendly but expect respect in the line-up. ## Inner Kom — For Intermediates Right in front of the Kommetjie car park breaks the Inner Kom — a more accessible reef break that produces clean waves on medium-sized swells. Perfect for surfers making the leap from beach breaks to reef. ### Long Beach — Endless Beach Break 8 kilometres of beach break right in front of [Villa Austral](/en/). Long Beach offers a surfable wave somewhere on every swell — and you will probably have it to yourself. Best time: early morning with offshore wind (easterly) or glassy conditions in the late afternoon. ## Kommetjie's Surf Culture Kommetjie is not Bondi Beach. There are no surf bars with cocktails and neon signs. The surf culture is quiet, deep and authentic. Locals have been surfing here for generations. The rhythm of the village follows the tides. In the morning, when the offshore wind turns the spray into golden light, the Kom car park fills up. In the afternoon, you grab a coffee at Long Beach Coffee Co. In the evening, you sit on the veranda and count the sets. ## Learning to Surf — Where Beginners Should Start Kommetjie itself is too challenging for beginners. Those wanting to learn should head to Muizenberg (22 km, 25 min.) — South Africa's best beginner spot. A 4/3mm wetsuit is essential; in winter (June–August) many locals even recommend 5/4mm with boots and gloves. ## The Shark Question Yes, there are great white sharks around the Cape Peninsula. But the probability of an encounter is statistically negligible.
